Bhutan, the Himalayan kingdom known for its Gross National Happiness philosophy, is turning to cryptocurrency to modernize its economy and boost its tourism sector. By integrating crypto payments across the country, Bhutan aims to attract younger, tech-savvy travelers and reduce reliance on outdated banking systems.

Modernizing Tourism with Crypto Payments

According to Damcho Rinzin, Director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, the country’s tourism industry has long suffered due to limited and outdated payment infrastructure. Tourists often struggle with slow and costly wire transfers, discouraging digital-first travelers.

To tackle this, Binance Pay partnered with DK Bank on May 7, enabling tourists to pay with crypto at nearly 1,000 local merchants. From hotels and restaurants to tour operators, this crypto-enabled payment system is already reshaping how travelers engage with Bhutan.

“This sends a strong message that Bhutan is very welcoming,” Rinzin emphasized during a panel at Binance’s Crypto-Powered Tour in Bhutan.

Boosting Economic Inclusion and Efficiency

Bhutan’s government is betting that crypto adoption will boost the tourism economy, aiming to attract 300,000 visitors annually through digital payments alone. Rinzin compared low-fee, near-instant crypto payments with traditional banking systems, highlighting their superior efficiency and inclusiveness.

“Digital inclusion is going to do wonders, not just for tourism, but for the broader economy,” Rinzin added.

The ability to pay in crypto reduces costs for both merchants and travelers, while improving financial access in rural areas.

Aligning Crypto with Bhutan’s Sustainable Vision

Carissa Nimah, Chief Marketing Officer of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, noted that this move supports the country’s evolving identity. She described Bhutan as a “traditional and authentic” nation with a visionary mindset.

“Accepting crypto opens Bhutan to a new category of traveler,” Nimah explained, linking the initiative to Bhutan’s broader mindful and sustainable tourism strategy.

The crypto integration also aligns with future-forward projects like the Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan’s upcoming economic hub designed to attract global entrepreneurs and wellness-focused travelers.

A Future-Ready Bhutan

Bhutan’s leap into crypto tourism reflects a strategic shift toward digital innovation and economic inclusion. By enabling global crypto users to transact with ease, the country not only welcomes a new wave of tourists but also creates long-term opportunities for local businesses and communities.

This modern approach may soon position Bhutan as a global model for crypto-powered sustainable tourism.
