Cathie Wood, the CEO of Ark Invest, has made another bold pivot—dumping traditional exchange stocks like Robinhood and Coinbase to double down on Ethereum-focused treasury assets. Her move comes during a volatile period in the Ethereum ecosystem, one that has caught many institutional investors off guard.

Ethereum Sees 24,000% Surge in Unstaking

Between July 16 and July 22, Ethereum experienced an unprecedented rise in validator exit requests. The number of validators queuing to unstake ETH jumped from just 1,920 to over 475,000, a staggering 24,000% increase.

This surge stretched validator exit wait times from under an hour to more than eight days, signaling significant stress on Ethereum’s staking infrastructure.

The catalyst wasn’t just Ethereum’s price rally or the recent “Pectra” upgrade. Instead, it was a sharp spike in ETH borrow rates, which suddenly rendered popular yield farming strategies — particularly looping strategies involving liquid stakingunprofitable.

What Triggered the Exodus?

Many institutional investors, including treasury management platforms, had been leveraging staking-borrowing loops: stake ETH, borrow ETH against the staked assets, and repeat the process to amplify yields. But as ETH borrowing costs surged, these strategies collapsed, triggering mass exits.

This created a bottleneck in the proof-of-stake exit queue, similar to a bank run scenario. Liquid staking tokens, like Lido’s stETH, also felt the pressure — briefly depegging from ETH due to market panic.

Cathie Wood’s Bold Response

Amid this chaos, Cathie Wood moved swiftly, signaling that her firm was increasing exposure to Ethereum-native treasury companies — platforms that manage ETH reserves and staking infrastructure efficiently. Her actions reflect a long-term conviction in Ethereum’s financial utility, especially in how decentralized assets can replace traditional banking rails.

By repositioning away from centralized exchange stocks and into Ethereum-backed treasuries, Wood appears to be hedging against structural risk in TradFi-linked crypto companies.

Conclusion: A Strategic Realignment

While others view the current unstaking event as a threat, Cathie Wood sees opportunity. By shifting into ETH-focused assets during a network stress test, Ark Invest is betting that Ethereum will emerge more resilient — and that Wall Street will be slow to catch up.

Wood’s playbook shows how deep blockchain understanding can offer a strategic edge in volatile markets — a lesson for institutions still lagging in crypto adoption.
