New Coinbase Amex card blends Bitcoin symbolism with real-world rewards
Coinbase is preparing to release a new American Express (Amex) credit card this fall in the United States, designed specifically for the growing community of Bitcoin enthusiasts. The card will offer up to 4% cashback in Bitcoin, making it one of the most competitive crypto rewards programs currently in development.
The design of the upcoming Coinbase Amex card is directly inspired by Bitcoin’s Genesis Block, the first block ever mined on the Bitcoin network in 2009. According to details shared by insiders, the design features etched references to the original “coinbase transaction” — the reward system that introduced Bitcoin’s first coins — making it both a payment tool and a tribute to digital currency history.
“This isn’t just another crypto card,”. “It’s a symbolic bridge between traditional finance and the Bitcoin economy, showing how mainstream institutions are adapting to crypto-native culture.”
A strategic move into Bitcoin rewards
Coinbase’s new Amex card arrives amid growing competition in the crypto rewards space, where companies like Gemini and Crypto.com have already captured early market share. However, Coinbase’s offering stands out for being Bitcoin-centric, rather than offering multiple altcoin rewards or exchange tokens.
The company has also hinted that users could gain tiered cashback rates based on their trading volume or Coinbase One membership, allowing heavy users to earn more Bitcoin passively through everyday spending.
“Coinbase is positioning Bitcoin as both an investment asset and a lifestyle currency,” noted a fintech strategist. “The Amex partnership adds prestige and reliability to that narrative.”
With American Express’s established reputation and Coinbase’s strong crypto user base, the collaboration underscores a broader trend — the convergence of traditional banking with digital finance.
If successful, this card could signal a new era of crypto-integrated consumer banking, where everyday purchases help users accumulate Bitcoin without direct trading.
The Coinbase Amex Bitcoin cashback card is expected to launch later in 2025, with early access anticipated for verified U.S. Coinbase customers.
