MetaMask, Phantom, and SEAL launch real-time “decentralized immune system” to fight crypto drainers
In response to a surge in crypto phishing attacks that drained over $400 million from users in the first half of 2025, MetaMask, Phantom, WalletConnect, and Backpack have joined forces with the Security Alliance (SEAL) to launch a new global phishing defense network aimed at protecting users across the digital asset ecosystem.
Phishing Becomes Crypto’s Top Threat
Phishing scams and crypto “drainers” have become the most common form of crypto theft, according to data from blockchain security firm CertiK, accounting for the majority of security incidents in 2025. Attackers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics — such as rotating malicious domains, using offshore hosting, and cloaking techniques — to evade detection.
“Drainers are a constant cat-and-mouse game,” said Ohm Shah, a security researcher at MetaMask. “Working alongside SEAL allows wallet teams to apply new research to practice faster, effectively throwing a wrench into the drainer’s infrastructure.”
The initiative follows SEAL’s recent launch of its verifiable phishing reports system, which enables security researchers to cryptographically prove that a site is malicious. This system serves as the foundation for the new network, ensuring that verified reports automatically propagate across all participating wallets.
How the New Defense Network Works
The real-time protection pipeline will enable any user who submits a valid phishing report to trigger warnings across all connected wallets immediately, without needing special permissions.
“This means quicker response times to new phishing threats and more funds saved,” SEAL stated. “We want to bring this protection to as many wallets as possible.”
By integrating across multiple wallets, the network aims to neutralize emerging threats before they spread, creating a shared layer of defense for millions of crypto users.
With more than $400 million lost to phishing in just six months, the creation of a shared, decentralized security network marks a pivotal moment for the crypto industry’s defense strategy — turning competition into collaboration for user safety.
