Elon Musk aims to redefine digital communication with his upcoming encrypted messaging app, promising a system that protects privacy and eliminates data-driven advertising.
X Chat to Challenge WhatsApp and Telegram
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to launch “X Chat,” a new messaging platform that he claims will use peer-to-peer encryption “similar to Bitcoin.” The standalone app, expected to roll out within the next few months, is designed to rival WhatsApp and Telegram while emphasizing user privacy and data security.
During an interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk revealed that X has completely rebuilt its messaging infrastructure, describing it as “a peer-to-peer-based encryption system… very good encryption; we’re testing it thoroughly.”
He added that X Chat will not rely on ad-based data collection, saying: “It won’t have any hooks for advertising. Competitors like WhatsApp know enough about what you’re texting to show you ads — that’s a massive security vulnerability.”
Privacy at the Core of X Chat’s Vision
Musk emphasized that the goal of X Chat is to create the most secure mainstream messenger available, free from the surveillance models that dominate social media.
He stated: “Our goal is to replace the old Twitter DM system with a fully encrypted platform where you can text, send files, and make audio or video calls. It will be the least insecure messaging system.”
The system’s peer-to-peer encryption model, inspired by the cryptographic framework that secures Bitcoin transactions, ensures that messages cannot be read or monetized by third parties.
Experts Weigh In on Privacy Promise
Cybersecurity analysts have cautiously welcomed the initiative, noting that Musk’s approach could raise the standard for encryption and transparency in mainstream messaging. One privacy researcher said, “If X Chat truly mirrors Bitcoin’s decentralized encryption philosophy, it could pressure other messaging platforms to reduce their data collection practices.”
However, experts also warn that Musk’s system will need rigorous independent testing to validate its security claims before launch.
A New Chapter in Encrypted Communication
By promising no advertising “hooks” and Bitcoin-like cryptography, Musk is positioning X Chat as a privacy-first alternative in a space dominated by corporate-owned platforms.
If successful, X Chat could redefine how billions of users think about private communication, setting a new benchmark for encryption-driven messaging in the digital age.
