The payment giant’s new feature lets sellers accept Bitcoin directly at checkout, signaling a major step in mainstream crypto adoption.

Square, the payment processor owned by Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc., has officially launched Bitcoin payments for its network of more than four million merchants, allowing sellers to accept BTC at the point of sale.

The feature enables businesses to choose between Bitcoin-to-Bitcoin, Bitcoin-to-fiat, fiat-to-Bitcoin, or fiat-to-fiat transactions — giving merchants flexibility in how they handle crypto settlements.

This is a major unlock for Bitcoin adoption at the everyday level,” said Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Block, in an announcement post on X.

According to Jacob Szymik, account executive at Square, the payment option is currently available only for in-person transactions, with online and invoicing support “in the works.” He confirmed that no fees will apply until 2027, after which processing costs are expected to be around 1% — still well below the 1.5%–4% typically charged by credit card networks.

Merchants Begin Accepting Bitcoin Across the U.S.

The update follows Square’s earlier pilot in October, when it introduced a conversion tool for sellers to automatically turn a portion of their daily sales into Bitcoin. Now, with full point-of-sale integration, thousands of businesses across the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan can begin accepting BTC seamlessly.

X users have already reported using the system in real-world settings. Parker Lewis, head of business development at Zaprite, shared that he bought coffee using Bitcoin at Medici, a Texas-based café.

Great day for Medici, Square, and all Square merchants going live with Bitcoin. Bitcoiners, support your local merchants,” Lewis said.

Katie Ananina, chief marketing officer at CitizenX, added that she was among the first to make a Bitcoin payment at the same location.

For years, getting merchants to accept BTC was painful — you had to convince them to become Bitcoiners themselves. Today’s Square move is absolutely legendary and makes the entry point so much lower,” she said.

Mapping the Global Bitcoin Economy

Dorsey also revealed a live global map showing all merchants accepting Bitcoin via Square, shared by the head of product design at Cash App, another Block subsidiary.

Convince your local Square seller to turn on Bitcoin acceptance for zero fees on sales. Convince them to keep it as Bitcoin to help them better survive dollar debasement,” Dorsey urged.

A recent YouGov survey found that 37% of respondents in the U.S. and U.K. now see crypto payments as one of the leading real-world applications for digital assets — a sign that Bitcoin’s use in commerce is rapidly expanding.

With Square’s rollout, millions of small and medium-sized businesses now have direct access to Bitcoin transactions, marking one of the largest steps yet toward mainstream crypto payment adoption.
