The payments sector is moving deeper into artificial intelligence as Visa and Stripe-backed Tempo unveiled new tools designed for AI-driven transactions on the same day. Visa’s crypto division introduced an experimental command-line interface called Visa CLI, aimed at enabling AI agents to execute secure, same-day payments directly during coding workflows.
Visa CLI Targets Secure Programmatic Transactions
The Visa CLI tool allows developers to grant AI agents the ability to complete payments without relying on traditional API keys, which often carry security risks. By removing sensitive credentials from the process, the system aims to reduce the likelihood of data leaks while simplifying programmatic card payments. The initiative reflects growing demand for seamless financial interactions within automated systems.
Tempo Blockchain Goes Live With Payment-Focused Infrastructure
At the same time, Tempo, a blockchain project backed by Stripe, launched its mainnet along with a payments protocol tailored for AI agents. The platform is designed to handle high-throughput stablecoin transactions, addressing the increasing need for machine-to-machine payments as AI systems become more autonomous.
Tempo also introduced the Machine Payments Protocol, an open standard developed with Stripe to coordinate payments between agents and services. The protocol supports multiple payment rails, with Visa enabling card network integration and Stripe supporting wallets and other methods. Additionally, Lightspark extended compatibility through the Bitcoin Lightning Network, further broadening the scope of AI-powered financial transactions.
