Revealing User Country Without Opt-Out Draws Criticism From Industry Figures
A new location-display feature introduced on X has triggered strong reactions across the crypto community, with several prominent industry figures warning that the update could expose users to unnecessary privacy risks. The platform now publicly shows the country an account is based in, a change that many argue was rolled out without sufficient user control or transparency.
X’s product team described the update as a tool to improve platform integrity and help users verify the origins of online conversations. But within hours, privacy-focused users, developers, and crypto founders raised concerns about the implications.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that while the feature might help contextualize discussions across different regions, it ultimately introduces “risky” privacy trade-offs. In a post discussing the update, he explained, “I initially saw some positive use cases, but many users are right to point out that revealing location without consent is wrong.” He added that even minor data leaks can be hazardous for individuals who rely on strict anonymity.
Several users pointed out that criminals could potentially exploit the country tag to identify high-value targets. “Some people cannot afford even a few extra bits of exposure,” Buterin noted, emphasizing that individuals should not have their privacy “retroactively removed.”
Concerns were echoed by major crypto founders. Uniswap’s Hayden Adams strongly criticized the update, calling it “mandatory doxing” and arguing that sensitive features should never be forced onto users. Andrei David, CTO at Summer.fi, added, “A privacy-centric design must always begin with the least revealing option. This rollout did not.”
Users Find Workarounds as Debate Intensifies
X representatives said that a region-only option exists for users in sensitive jurisdictions. Community leaders also shared instructions on how to disable the feature entirely. According to one Web3 community lead, users can hide the new tag through the settings and privacy menu, either turning off the visibility or switching to a broader regional category.
Despite the criticism, some users welcomed the feature, arguing that revealing broad geographic information—especially in large countries—does not meaningfully reduce anonymity. Others said the added transparency could help prevent accounts from misrepresenting their location in political or financial debates.
As the platform continues refining its identity tools, privacy remains a key concern for crypto users who depend heavily on anonymity in online spaces.
