Ethereum is preparing to launch a new smart contract standard, ERC-8004, which allows AI agents to discover, verify, and interact with each other across platforms without relying on centralized intermediaries. The deployment is expected on Thursday, 9 AM ET, according to MetaMask’s AI lead, Marco De Rossi.
ERC-8004 Unlocks Trustless AI Communication
The ERC-8004 standard provides a unified framework for registering and validating AI agents on Ethereum smart contracts. Unlike existing protocols that manage agent communication or task orchestration, ERC-8004 addresses two critical challenges:
- Discovery – finding AI agents across organizational boundaries.
- Trust – verifying which agents are credible in untrusted environments.
By enabling portable reputation and cross-platform verification, the protocol allows AI agents to operate as economic actors rather than isolated tools.
Broader Implications for Ethereum and Layer-2 Networks
The standard does not require changes to Ethereum’s core network and will also be compatible with the Base layer-2 network, which supports instant stablecoin payments via the x402 protocol. This functionality enables AI agents to autonomously pay for services, further fostering a decentralized AI economy.
Ethereum Foundation AI lead Davide Crapis highlighted that ERC-8004 positions Ethereum as a platform to secure and settle AI-to-AI interactions, allowing services to interoperate globally without centralized control.
The launch of ERC-8004 represents a significant step toward a trustless, cross-organizational AI ecosystem on blockchain.
