AI Agents Could Disrupt Ad-Based Internet Model, Coinbase Engineer Says

Coinbase engineering leader Erik Reppel has warned that the rise of AI agents could undermine the internet’s long standing advertising based revenue model. AI Agents Challenge Traditional Digital Advertising Economy

Coinbase engineering leader Erik Reppel has warned that the rise of AI agents could undermine the internet’s long standing advertising based revenue model. Speaking at Consensus Miami 2026, Reppel explained that the web was originally built for human interaction, where advertising plays a central role in monetization.

However, autonomous AI systems operate differently. According to Reppel, these agents do not engage with advertisements, effectively bypassing the mechanism that funds much of today’s online content and services.

Crypto Micropayments and x402 Protocol Solution

Reppel proposed a shift toward crypto powered micropayments as an alternative model. He highlighted the x402 protocol, which is designed to enable automatic payments using the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. This system allows AI agents to pay small amounts for accessing APIs, content or digital services instead of relying on ad exposure.

Emergence of the Agentic Economy

The concept reflects a broader transition toward what Reppel described as an “agentic economy,” where machines interact directly with digital infrastructure. He estimates this emerging market could grow to between $3 trillion and $5 trillion within the next four years.

Future of Internet Monetization

Reppel suggested that websites may adopt hybrid models, showing ads to human users while charging AI agents directly. This shift could position stablecoins and blockchain-based payments as core infrastructure for the next phase of internet commerce.
