The options market for Bitcoin is showing signs of heightened caution as traders increase spending on downside protection. The options market for Bitcoin is showing signs of heightened caution as traders increase spending on downside protection. Data released by VanEck shows the put/call open interest ratio climbed to 0.84, marking its highest level since June 2021. This shift reflects growing demand for put options, which are commonly used to protect portfolios against falling prices.

Over the past 30 days, traders spent approximately $685 million on put options, while call option premiums declined by 12% to around $562 million. Relative to spot trading activity, put premiums reached roughly 4 basis points, the highest level recorded in available data.
Volatility Drop and Cooling Leverage Reflect Cautious Sentiment
Despite stabilizing prices, market indicators suggest investors remain defensive. Bitcoin’s 30-day average price fell about 19%, while realized volatility declined from around 80 to just above 50. Futures funding rates also eased from 4.1% to 2.7%, indicating reduced leveraged speculation.

Historical patterns suggest that similar spikes in downside protection have often preceded price recoveries. Past data over six years shows comparable readings were followed by average gains of 13% over 90 days and 133% over 360 days, even as onchain activity remained relatively weak and miner selling stayed contained.
