Former LA Deputy Sentenced in Crypto Linked Extortion Case

A former member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for assisting a crypto figure known as the “Godfather” in an extortion operation.

Michael Coberg received a 63-month sentence from a U.S. federal court and was ordered to pay $127,000 in restitution. Prosecutors said he worked with Adam Iza, a crypto platform founder, to intimidate victims and force financial transfers.

Court documents detail how Coberg helped detain a victim during a financial dispute and stood by while funds were transferred under pressure. In another incident, prosecutors said a victim was taken to a shooting range where threats were made to extract money.

Sham Arrest Scheme and Abuse of Authority

Authorities also outlined a separate plan in which Coberg and others orchestrated a fake drug-related arrest. The target was allegedly lured into a setup before being detained with assistance from law enforcement contacts.

Prosecutors argued that Coberg misused his official position for financial gain, receiving substantial payments for his involvement. Adam Iza has pleaded guilty in a related case and is awaiting sentencing.
