Officials stated that specialized technical support and decryption expertise played a key role in regaining access to the wallet, which had been considered permanently inaccessible after its private keys were believed lost.

Bitcoin Wallet Linked to 6,000 BTC Drug Proceeds

The recovered wallet is one of 12 Bitcoin wallets originally connected to Collins, who purchased roughly 6,000 Bitcoin between late 2011 and early 2012 using proceeds from cannabis sales. The total holdings were spread across multiple wallets, with private keys printed on paper and hidden inside the cap of a fishing rod case.

Authorities reported that the keys were lost after Collins’ rental property was cleared out following his arrest in 2017. Despite the loss, blockchain intelligence later identified a wallet labeled under his name that transferred 500 Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime, marking the first confirmed movement in years.

Investigation Highlights Challenges of Lost Bitcoin Keys

Blockchain data indicates Collins controls 14 addresses holding about 5,500 Bitcoin, valued at more than $391 million. Law enforcement officials noted that recovering lost private keys is extremely rare due to Bitcoin’s strong cryptographic security, making this case an unusual example of successful digital asset recovery.
