Italy Refuses US Use of Sicily Base for Middle East Operations

Italy has denied permission for United States military aircraft to land at the Sigonella air base in Sicily before heading to the Middle East, according to a source familiar with the matter. The decision confirmed a report by Corriere della Sera, which said several US bombers had planned to stop at the eastern Sicily base before continuing their mission.

The source did not disclose the number of aircraft or the exact timing of the decision but noted that Italy refused permission because US authorities had not formally requested approval or consulted Italian military leadership, as required under treaties governing US installations. Italy’s defence ministry has not issued an immediate response.

Growing European Resistance to War Logistics

Centre-left opposition parties have urged Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government to block US use of Italian bases to avoid involvement in the conflict. Meloni’s administration stated it would seek parliamentary approval if formal requests are submitted.

The move follows Spain’s decision to close its airspace and deny US access to Moron and Rota bases, a position confirmed by Defence Minister Margarita Robles. Rising tensions have intensified after attacks on Gulf oil tankers and threats to global energy supplies.
