A new app launched by the White House has raised concerns among users and security researchers over location tracking, data collection, and potential security vulnerabilities. Released as a way to provide a “direct line to the White House,” the app allows users to receive breaking news alerts, watch livestreams, and stay updated on government policy developments.
The Google Play Store page indicates that the app may collect personal information, including phone numbers, while Apple’s App Store directs users to the White House privacy policy. The policy states that IP addresses and other basic information are automatically stored, and names and email addresses of subscribers may be retained, though these are not required to use the app.
Developers on X, including Thereallo and Adam, a security engineer and infrastructure architect, reported that the app contains code capable of accessing GPS location. They claim it could track a device every 4.5 minutes in the foreground and 9.5 minutes in the background. Thereallo also noted that the app collects notification interactions, in-app message clicks, and phone numbers. Adam warned that security may be weak, allowing interception of API traffic on shared Wi‑Fi or modification of app behavior on jailbroken devices, though no servers were probed and findings have not been independently verified.
