Harmonic, a mathematics-focused artificial intelligence startup co-founded by Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, has awarded a research sponsorship to Neel Somani, the former founder and chief executive of blockchain research firm Eclipse. The announcement was made publicly on Tuesday, naming Somani as the first recipient of Harmonic’s Rising Mathematician Research Sponsorship.
Harmonic described the sponsorship as support for Somani’s work at the intersection of mathematics and artificial intelligence. The company recently stated plans to allocate up to $1 million toward similar sponsorships for students and researchers, positioning the initiative as an effort to fund advanced mathematical research outside traditional academic structures.
Background on Eclipse and Allegations
Somani founded Eclipse in 2022, a blockchain development firm known for building an Ethereum layer-2 network using the Solana Virtual Machine. He stepped down as CEO in 2024 following pressure from investors, including Hack VC, after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced. Somani has publicly denied the allegations, stating he has never engaged in sexual harassment or assault.
Leadership of Eclipse transitioned to Sydney Huang following Somani’s departure, and the company has continued development under new management.
Harmonic’s Growth and Public Attention
Harmonic raised $120 million in funding late last year, reaching a valuation of approximately $1.45 billion. The decision to sponsor Somani has drawn attention due to the unresolved nature of the allegations and the high-profile involvement of a major fintech executive, highlighting ongoing debates around accountability, reputation, and support within the technology and crypto sectors.
