Crypto Scam Forces Unusual Police Action in Jasper County

A Texas sheriff made headlines after taking drastic action to help a local family recover $25,000 lost to a crypto scam. The case has sparked heated debate online about law enforcement tactics and crypto ATM regulations.

According to local reports, a family in Jasper County, northwest of Houston, was targeted by a scammer posing as a government official. The fraudster claimed the family owed $25,000 in fines and directed them to deposit the amount via a Bitcoin ATM.

Sheriff Uses Power Tools to Access Funds

Sheriff Chuck Havard, responding to the scam, secured a search warrant and physically cut open the crypto ATM, which was reportedly operated by Bitcoin Depot. Officers recovered approximately $32,000, which included the amount the victims had deposited.

Photos show deputies using industrial cutting equipment to breach the machine. Sheriff Havard defended the move, saying:

“When scammers attempt to take advantage of Jasper County residents, we will utilize every resource to protect their property at all costs.”

Public Reactions and Legal Concerns

The incident has raised concerns among crypto users and legal observers. Some questioned the legality of damaging third-party property and seizing funds from a legitimate business.

“Unless it was the kiosk owner who was scamming, this makes no sense,” one Reddit user commented, comparing the move to confiscating a retail store’s cash after a scam purchase.

While Bitcoin Depot has not yet commented publicly, the case highlights a growing tension between law enforcement and crypto infrastructure.

Crypto ATMs Under Growing Scrutiny

The Texas case is part of a broader crackdown on crypto ATMs amid rising fraud concerns. According to the FBI, over $246 million in losses from crypto ATM scams were reported in 2024, up 31% from the previous year.

  • Washington state’s Spokane city recently banned crypto ATMs altogether.
  • Australia capped crypto ATM deposits and withdrawals at AU$5,000 ($3,250) earlier in June.

Conclusion: Protection or Overreach?

As crypto adoption grows, regulators and law enforcement face complex challenges. While Sheriff Havard’s actions recovered stolen funds, the legal and ethical implications of forcibly opening private crypto machines remain controversial.

This case underscores the urgent need for clear policy frameworks to protect victims while respecting legal boundaries.
