XChat Aims to Compete With Secure Messaging Platforms
Social media platform X has launched a new messaging feature named XChat, promising advanced communication capabilities. The service is described as a major upgrade to the platform’s current direct messaging system, offering audio and video calls, vanishing messages, file sharing, and encryption.
XChat is designed to offer private, secure, and flexible messaging for users seeking more than basic text communication.
Musk Claims “Bitcoin-Style Encryption” — A Controversial Term
One of the most discussed features is the implementation of what has been called “Bitcoin-style encryption.” However, this phrase has sparked confusion among cryptography experts.
Bitcoin does not use encryption to secure its blockchain. Instead, it uses cryptographic principles like Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) and SHA-256 hashing.
Bitcoin’s core technology relies on elliptic curve cryptography, not traditional encryption. The term used appears to refer to peer-to-peer communication encryption, such as BIP-151, a proposal aimed at encrypting node-to-node communication in Bitcoin’s network—not the blockchain itself.
The actual architecture and level of encryption used in XChat remain undisclosed, leading to speculation over its security robustness.
XChat Built in Rust Language With New Security Architecture
According to available details, XChat is built using the Rust programming language, known for its memory safety and concurrency features. Musk described it as having a “whole new architecture,” designed to support privacy-forward features such as disappearing messages and file transfer.
A four-digit passcode system has also been introduced to add another layer of security for encrypted chats.
X Expands Toward Financial Technology With “X Money”
Alongside the messaging upgrade, X is also developing a digital payments feature called X Money. Testing is scheduled to begin later in 2025 through a limited-access beta.
The company states that “extreme care” is being taken to ensure security when user funds are involved.
Positioning as an All-in-One Platform
X’s introduction of XChat and X Money signals a broader strategy to create an all-in-one digital ecosystem, integrating social media, secure messaging, and financial services.
This positions X as a direct competitor to platforms like Signal, Telegram, and fintech apps such as Venmo and Cash App.
