Anthropic Names Natural Gas Supply as a Risk to Its Data Center Plans

Anthropic's IPO prospectus devotes a long section to gas. More data center operators are moving to gas fired generation while regulation slows some of those projects, so the company expects greater competition for the same fuel and pipeline capacity near its sites. It says this could weaken its ability to sign firm fuel and transportation contracts and to obtain pipeline connections. It also warns that failing to secure firm gas during construction could delay or end a planned facility. Transformers, turbines, generators, substations and transmission gear already face longer deliveries, higher prices, tariffs, national security requirements and allocation limits.

Melius Research managing director James West told clients on Tuesday that the filing confirms gas as an AI vertical, calling AI compute a natural gas demand story. Goldman Sachs research expects US data center electricity use to double between 2025 and 2027, following 20 years of roughly flat grid expansion.

Behind the Meter Power and Oracle’s Project Jupiter

Developers now build their own generation or buy capacity from existing providers, which has left makers of gas turbines, such as GE Vernova, with backlogs lasting years. Oracle declared force majeure after being denied a gas pipeline permit needed to power its Project Jupiter site in New Mexico.
