Argentine President Javier Milei announced plans to sanction oil companies conducting drilling activities in the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory that Argentina has long claimed as its own. The announcement came just days after the US president suggested he was reconsidering America’s traditionally neutral stance on the disputed South Atlantic territory.
Milei described the planned oil exploration activities as an urgent threat to Argentina’s national interests, marking a notable shift toward a tougher stance after previously favoring diplomatic approaches to the territorial dispute. He said he would send legislation to Argentina’s Congress aimed at strengthening penalties against companies operating in the region without authorization, along with their suppliers and shareholders.
UK Reaffirms Commitment to the Islands
British officials responded firmly, stating that residents of the Falkland Islands have consistently chosen to remain British and reaffirming the UK’s continued commitment to the territory. Officials suggested Milei’s remarks were more reflective of domestic political dynamics in Argentina than an actual shift in the territorial dispute.
Sea Lion Oilfield at the Center of the Dispute
The controversy centers around a major offshore oil project located near the islands, involving an Israeli-listed energy company and a UK listed exploration firm with a significant stake in the venture. The project is said to hold a substantial oil resource base, with development work expected to begin in the coming months. Shares of the UK listed company involved in the project dropped following Milei’s announcement.
