ARK Invest, led by Cathie Wood, purchased nearly 3.3 million shares of SpaceX on the company’s first day of public trading, building a position worth more than $500 million. The move came during SpaceX’s highly anticipated stock market debut.

SpaceX shares were sold at $135 during the offering and closed their first trading session at $160.95, gaining more than 19%. The strong performance highlighted growing investor demand for high-growth technology and space-related companies.

Stock Sales Help Fund SpaceX Purchase

Data from ARK’s daily trading disclosures suggests the firm funded the purchase by reducing positions in several other companies. During the week leading up to the IPO, ARK sold nearly $280 million worth of stocks. On the IPO day alone, the firm reportedly sold around 948,000 shares across 13 companies worth at least $48 million, including holdings in Advanced Micro Devices, Roku and Baidu.

The ARK Innovation ETF made the largest purchase, with SpaceX accounting for about 3.28% of its portfolio by the end of the trading day.

However, the decision to allocate significant capital to SpaceX suggests investor interest is increasingly shifting toward artificial intelligence and space companies. With firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic pursuing public listings, competition for investment capital is growing. ARK estimates SpaceX could reach a valuation of $2.5 trillion by 2030, with a bullish scenario approaching $3.1 trillion.
