Realized Volatility Hits Multi-Month Low

Bitcoin’s 30-day realized volatility, a measure of actual price swings over the past month, has fallen to an annualized 21.80%, its lowest reading since October 2025.

Implied Volatility Tells a Different Story

Options pricing looks ahead rather than backward, and that forward-looking gauge isn’t nearly as calm. The 30-day implied volatility measure, tracked through Volmex’s BVIV index, sits near 36%, roughly two-thirds above realized levels.

BTC Implied Volatility

Volatility tends to swing back toward its average over time, often jumping sharply after long quiet stretches. That backdrop can tempt option buyers into thinking they’re getting a deal during calm periods. In reality, elevated implied volatility means options remain expensive, and any trader buying calls or puts needs a bigger price move just to break even.

Shorter-Term Data Shows the Same Pattern

One week at-the-money implied volatility stands near 29%, compared with realized volatility of about 16%, according to Glassnode data. Both numbers are individually low by historical standards, but the spread between them is close to a one-year high.

Bitcoin’s spot market may be unusually still, but protection against a sudden move still carries a real premium. Anyone using options as a hedge or a bet on future volatility should factor in that higher cost before entering a position.
