What’s Driving The Change

The shift comes after a $292 million exploit hit a LayerZero-powered bridge earlier this year, drawing fresh scrutiny to how these bridges are set up. Since then, several projects including Mantle, Kelp, Lombard, Solv Protocol, Virtuals, Re, and Kraken have made the same switch to Chainlink’s CCIP system.

Understanding Wrapped Bitcoin

Wrapped bitcoin lets bitcoin holders use their coins across other blockchains for trading, lending, and as collateral in decentralized finance. It currently holds a market value around $7.4 billion. Combined with earlier migration totals of $7.24 billion, the overall shift toward Chainlink’s system now sits near $14.6 billion.

How BitGo’s New Setup Works

BitGo plans to standardize its wrapped bitcoin deployments on Chainlink’s Cross Chain Token standard and will use CCIP by default going forward. This setup lets BitGo keep control over its token contracts and manage rate limits on transfers between chains.

The company originally picked LayerZero back in 2024 for expanding wrapped bitcoin across networks like Avalanche and BNB Chain, requiring approval from BitGo’s own verifier plus LayerZero or Polyhedra for each transfer. Chainlink’s directory already shows compatible pools live on Ethereum and Ronin, though a full migration timeline hasn’t been shared yet.
