CFTC to Explore Crypto Rules Alongside SEC as Congress Stalls on CLARITY Act
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has announced a meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee for August 20, aimed at addressing regulatory questions tied to crypto assets, artificial intelligence and prediction markets. According to a notice issued Thursday, the agency plans to discuss areas where regulatory action could work alongside future congressional legislation, a likely reference to the Senate's failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act before its August recess.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has announced a meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee for August 20, aimed at addressing regulatory questions tied to crypto assets, artificial intelligence and prediction markets. According to a notice issued Thursday, the agency plans to discuss areas where regulatory action could work alongside future congressional legislation, a likely reference to the Senate’s failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act before its August recess.

SEC Set to Hold Similar Discussion
The CFTC’s announcement follows a comparable notice from the Securities and Exchange Commission, which plans to discuss new rules for a tailored offering framework covering certain crypto-related investment contracts. An SEC spokesperson said the agency supports congressional efforts to pass a market structure bill but will continue working within its existing authority to advance crypto regulation until such legislation passes.
Leadership Gaps Raise Concerns
Michael Selig remains the CFTC’s only Senate confirmed commissioner and chair, with no signals from President Donald Trump about additional nominations to fill out the agency’s leadership. While Selig will be joined by CFTC staff at the upcoming meeting, the lack of a full five-member bipartisan commission has prompted lawmakers to call on the president to act and fill the vacant seats.
