Charles Schwab announced plans to add Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink to its crypto trading platform, expanding beyond the Bitcoin and Ethereum trading it introduced earlier this year. The investment firm said these three cryptocurrencies will become available for clients to buy and sell in the coming months, describing the move as part of a deliberate effort to grow its digital asset lineup with well-established tokens that match client interest.
Schwab Takes a Cautious Approach Compared to Crypto-Native Platforms
Schwab first launched direct Bitcoin and Ethereum trading for clients in May, charging a 75 basis point fee per transaction. While competitors like Coinbase and Robinhood already offer access to a much wider range of digital assets, Schwab has moved more gradually, choosing to add only a handful of the largest and most established cryptocurrencies beyond its initial two offerings.
A Massive Client Base Could Reshape Crypto Distribution
With more than $12 trillion in client assets and 39 million active brokerage accounts, Schwab’s expansion into crypto represents a significant opportunity for these tokens to reach everyday retail investors, especially as more trading activity shifts from crypto-native exchanges toward traditional financial platforms.
Company Emphasizes Education and Familiarity
A Schwab executive overseeing digital assets said the expansion gives clients more choice in building a crypto allocation alongside the traditional investing and banking services they already use through the firm. The company said its approach centers on offering access to well known cryptocurrencies supported by educational tools and resources to help clients make informed decisions about incorporating digital assets into their broader investment strategy.
