Coinbase is now allowing eligible US retail customers to request shares in initial public offerings directly through its app, beginning with wearable health tech company Oura’s upcoming debut.
Expanding Beyond Crypto Trading
Users will be able to request shares at the IPO offer price before public trading begins, though allocations may be full, partial, or unavailable depending on overall demand. The company described the move as part of its broader effort to give customers early access to high-profile companies before they list on public markets. This marks Coinbase’s entry into primary market securities offerings, building on its earlier launch of pre IPO derivatives tied to private companies like SpaceX, which offered synthetic price exposure rather than actual ownership.
Broader Push Into Traditional Markets
The IPO access is structured as a securities offering, with a partner firm handling execution, clearing, and custody. Coinbase has also been expanding into traditional finance more broadly, allowing US customers to transfer existing stock portfolios onto its platform and trade major stocks, indexes, and exchange traded funds. The company recently filed a regulatory request seeking approval to offer continuous, round-the-clock trading of equity based perpetual contracts.
