Coinbase Clearing LLC: What the CFTC Approval Covers

The registration took effect Monday, letting the clearinghouse handle fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. It does not cover Coinbase’s leveraged products. General counsel Molly Abraham said the approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling more regulated derivatives products with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.

How This Fits Coinbase’s Derivatives Business

The clearinghouse joins Coinbase’s existing futures broker, Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., and its exchange, Coinbase Derivatives LLC. A derivatives clearing organization sits between buyers and sellers in a trade, managing settlement and counterparty risk, including what happens if one side defaults. Through its exchange, Coinbase already lists US-regulated futures on Bitcoin and Ether, along with commodity and equity-index futures and long-dated perpetual-style crypto futures.

Crypto Firms Build In-House Derivatives Infrastructure

The move continues Coinbase’s shift from a trading platform into a provider of financial market infrastructure. Other crypto companies are following a similar path. Kraken parent Payward completed its acquisition of Bitnomial in May, gaining a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and futures brokerage of its own.
