Cronos Blockchain Halts Operations After $75 Million Exploit on Tectonic

The Cronos blockchain network was halted on Sunday after an exploit targeting decentralized lending protocol Tectonic resulted in an estimated $75 million impact. Most of the affected funds reportedly remain on the Cronos network, though the network's operators have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the breach or announced a timeline for resuming operations.

Most of the affected funds reportedly remain on the Cronos network, though the network’s operators have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the breach or announced a timeline for resuming operations.

Thin Liquidity Enabled Price Manipulation Attack

According to a blockchain researcher who analyzed the incident, the attacker took advantage of a low collateral requirement and weak liquidity surrounding Tectonic’s governance token, artificially inflating its price roughly one hundred times within just 20 minutes. The attacker then used the inflated token value as collateral to borrow other assets from the protocol, a technique similar to previous exploits seen in decentralized finance.

Portion of Funds Already Moved Off-Chain

Early estimates put the loss at around $66 million, with roughly $6 million reportedly transferred to a separate blockchain network before the halt took effect. A researcher later identified an additional wallet linked to the attacker holding several million dollars more, raising the total estimated impact closer to $75 million.

Related Exchange Says Operations Remain Unaffected

The CEO of a major crypto exchange connected to the Cronos ecosystem confirmed that the platform’s trading app and exchange services continued operating normally throughout the incident, stating that user funds on those platforms remained secure. Neither the blockchain network nor the lending protocol has indicated whether they plan to freeze the attacker’s wallets, attempt fund recovery, or compensate impacted users.
