Crypto is increasingly becoming a contrarian investment as investors focus more on booming sectors such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and space technology, according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan.

In his latest market note, Hougan said crypto is facing a difficult period because investors are finding stronger returns elsewhere. He pointed to the Nasdaq-100’s 43% year-over-year gain and growing interest in AI-related companies as key reasons why digital assets are struggling to attract capital.

Investors Shift Focus From Hype to Fundamentals

Hougan argued that crypto is no longer being driven by momentum and excitement. Instead, investors are becoming more selective and focusing on projects with strong fundamentals and real utility.

He said contrarian investments require patience, a long-term mindset, and a willingness to invest in areas that are currently overlooked by the broader market.

Smaller Crypto Assets Showing Strength

Unlike previous market downturns, investors are not simply moving into Bitcoin for safety. Hougan noted that several smaller cryptocurrencies with unique growth stories have outperformed recently. Hyperliquid has gained 72% over the past month, while BNB rose 17%, Zcash climbed 50%, and Stellar advanced 44%.

According to Hougan, this rotation shows that fundamentals are beginning to matter more than market sentiment.

Regulatory Clarity Remains a Key Catalyst

Hougan also highlighted uncertainty surrounding the Clarity Act, a proposed crypto market structure bill. Analysts currently estimate around a 50% to 55% chance of the legislation passing.

He believes large-cap cryptocurrencies may struggle to sustain a major rally until regulatory uncertainty is reduced and institutional investors gain greater confidence in the market.
