Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act Lawsuit

The Crypto Council for Innovation and the Blockchain Association will join the Digital Chamber and others in fighting the state’s 0.2% tax on crypto assets. In a Tuesday filing in the Circuit Court of Sangamon County, they asked for an expedited summary judgment schedule, which could produce a ruling by March if approved.

Six Month Delay in Crypto Tax Enforcement

Illinois officials earlier agreed to move the start date from Jan. 1 to July 1, 2027, after claims that the tax was slipped into the state budget without debate or public feedback. CCI CEO Ji Kim said the pause protects residents and businesses, but the merits still need to be decided quickly. Digital Chamber CEO Cody Carbone said the group will continue until the tax is struck down for good.

Blockchain Association Leadership Change

Summer Mersinger, who joined the group last year after leaving the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, steps down as CEO on Friday. Former CEO Kristin Smith will serve as interim head, while Mersinger is expected to stay on until the end of 2026.
