Crypto Lending Vault Deposits Pass $10 Billion as Regulators Take a Closer Look

How DeFi Lending Vaults and Curators Work
Vaults run on smart contracts across decentralized finance platforms. Each one has a curator, essentially an investment manager, who picks the lending strategies, sets the risk limits and collects fees. Returns usually range from 3% to 10%, though riskier strategies can pay 20% or more.
Crypto Vault Risks for Depositors
The higher yields come with real exposure. Loans can be backed by illiquid tokens, crypto backed stablecoins or tokenized private credit, so depositors can lose out if collateral drops in value or becomes hard to sell. Automatic liquidations can deepen market declines, and hacks, coding errors and flawed pricing mechanisms add further weak points. Smart contracts are publicly visible, but investors may chase headline yields without understanding what sits underneath.
Regulatory Scrutiny of DeFi Vaults
Regulators are now asking whether existing rules should apply. The US Securities and Exchange Commission has raised questions about vaults that hold securities, while European regulators have proposed oversight of intermediaries that give people access to DeFi.
