Crypto Slides as Bitcoin Nears $80,000 Ahead of Flash Crash Anniversary

Bitcoin dropped about 5% in 24 hours on Thursday, sliding to a one-month low just above $80,000. That leaves it down more than 8% from the near $87,000 level it touched only four days earlier. The rest of the market looks even weaker, with ether down roughly 6% on the day and Solana off 9%. All of them have lost double digit percentages over the past week.

Flash Crash Anniversary Adds to Market Nerves

The selloff comes as the one-year mark of the October 10, 2025 flash crash approaches. Only days after setting a record above $126,000, bitcoin tumbled from about $122,000 to $105,000 that Friday evening in U.S. time, with some exchanges seeing even lower prints. Most of the drop happened within minutes in thin trading.

Institutional Outlook Stays Positive

A State Street survey of 300 asset managers, asset owners and wealth managers, published Tuesday, found that about 51% expect digital assets to go mainstream within five years, up from 11% in 2024. Institutions hold an average of 11% of their portfolios in digital assets and expect that share to climb over the next three years, a sign adoption is growing even as prices struggle to break higher.
