Protests during regional elections in Pakistan administered Kashmir have turned deadly, with a banned Kashmiri rights group alleging that more than 30 people were killed in clashes with security forces ahead of the vote’s second round.
Governing Party Wins Amid Boycott
Pakistan’s ruling PML-N party secured nine of thirteen contested seats across the districts of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber earlier this week. The election, originally planned as a single vote, was split into three phases due to security concerns, with remaining rounds scheduled for early and mid August. The Imran Khan-founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which won the region’s 2021 election, boycotted this round citing fraud concerns.
Communications Blackout Hinders Verification
Since regional authorities banned the Joint Awami Action Committee protest movement in June, banking services, roads and internet access have remained largely disrupted, making it difficult to independently confirm casualty figures reported by the group. Authorities confirmed one security officer was killed and five injured during Monday’s clashes, while a separate official acknowledged at least three protester deaths in Mirpur this week.
Long-Standing Regional Tensions
Discontent in the self-governing region has built for years, driven by accusations of economic neglect and political interference from Islamabad. Analysts note that forming a stable regional government may prove difficult, since the ruling party likely needs support from contested legislative seats tied to Kashmiri refugee constituencies, seats long disputed between rival parties and protest groups.
