DOJ Moves to Drop $722 Million BitClub Fraud Charges Against Founder Matthew Goettsche
The US Department of Justice is reportedly working to dismiss criminal charges against Matthew Goettsche, founder of the now-defunct BitClub Network, which allegedly scammed investors out of $722 million between 2014 and 2019. A letter filed with New Jersey district court Judge Claire Cecchi this week said both sides had reached an agreement in principle but still need time to work out the details.

Goettsche faced trial in October on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and selling unregistered securities. He was indicted back in December 2019. Three former associates in the scheme, Silviu Balaci, Joseph Abel, and Gordon Beckstead, already pleaded guilty.

Policy Shift Behind the Reversal
The move traces back to an April 2025 memo from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who pushed the DOJ to stop treating crypto prosecutions as a regulatory tool. BitClub had marketed itself as a legitimate Bitcoin mining pool, but investigators say it faked mining data and earnings reports to pull in more money.
DOJ Still Pursuing Other Crypto Crimes
Even with this case winding down, the agency continues cracking down elsewhere, including a 70-month prison sentence for a $263 million crypto theft and hundreds of millions in frozen or seized funds tied to scam operations.
