ECB Digital Euro Innovation Platform Opens Applications

The ECB opened applications Monday for a new round of its digital euro innovation platform, split into two tracks. One track offers hands-on testing of payment features, running from January through June 2027, where selected participants will build prototypes for e-receipts, multiparty transactions, conditional payments and new front-end features. The other track consists of workshops covering AI-enabled payments, micropayments, machine to machine interactions and digital euro uses in public services.

AI Agents and Machine-to-Machine Payments

The addition of AI agent testing reflects growing interest in how autonomous systems might handle transactions without human input. A subset of participants will present their work at the ECB’s Frankfurt headquarters, with findings expected to shape future digital euro features and use cases.

What Is the Digital Euro?

The digital euro is a proposed central bank digital currency for retail payments across the euro area, designed to function as digital cash alongside existing banknotes and coins. Any actual issuance would still require EU legislation and a subsequent ECB decision.

Separate Pilot With 36 Payment Firms

The ECB has already selected 36 banks and payment firms, including Revolut, Stripe and Deutsche Bank, for a separate 12-month pilot beginning in the second half of 2027, run independently of the innovation platform.
