The European Central Bank has activated a new digital infrastructure system aimed at helping banks settle transactions in central bank money, marking a major step in Europe’s push against the growing influence of dollar backed stablecoins.

A New Settlement Bridge for Banks

The platform, called Pontes, connects tokenized securities systems to the Eurosystem’s real-time settlement network, allowing banks to complete blockchain-based transactions using central bank funds instead of private stablecoins. Access is currently limited to credit institutions. The launch follows years of testing, including dozens of trials involving major market participants and billions of euros in simulated transactions. A second initiative is also underway to design a broader tokenized finance framework by 2028.

Concerns Over Dollar-Based Stablecoins

European officials have voiced growing concern that dollar-denominated stablecoins, now representing a market worth hundreds of billions, could introduce financial instability and reduce Europe’s control over its own payment systems. Strict regional crypto regulations have already pushed some stablecoin issuers out of the market, even as euro based stablecoin adoption remains far smaller than its dollar counterpart. A separate retail focused digital euro project remains years away, with pilot testing not expected until 2027 and full rollout dependent on future legislative approval.
