Operation Red Sunset Investigates Espionage and Grid Threats

Federal authorities launched Operation Red Sunset in November last year, led by the US Department of Homeland Security, to examine whether Bitmain’s ASIC mining machines could be remotely accessed for espionage or used to disrupt the US power grid. Reports indicate the probe remains unresolved, with national security investigations often continuing for years without public disclosure.

Mining hardware market share is divided between three large manufacturers: University of Cambridge

Earlier scrutiny included halted shipments of Bitmain devices and a separate investigation into a related Chinese chip firm over alleged links to sanctioned company Huawei. A 2024 federal review also flagged mining equipment operating near a US military base as raising significant security concerns.

Warren also requested details on communications between Bitmain, Commerce officials, and investors connected to American Bitcoin Corp., which includes Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. among its backers. The company previously agreed to purchase 16,000 Bitmain mining rigs in a $314 million deal.

Meanwhile, Bitmain is preparing to open its first US-based ASIC manufacturing facility, with chip production expected to begin in early 2026 and scale by year-end, increasing regulatory attention on its operations.
