Europe’s top markets watchdog has told crypto companies operating in the bloc to stop offering services tied to stablecoins that fall outside the Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation. The European Securities and Markets Authority issued the call on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and wants national regulators to make sure firms deal with any leftover exposure by January 8, 2027 at the latest.

Which Crypto Services Are Affected

The message is aimed at providers licensed under MiCA. According to ESMA, they should no longer serve EU clients with non-compliant stablecoins. The scope is wide and covers trading platforms, exchange services, order execution, custody, transfers, investment advice and portfolio management.

New Controls for Crypto Providers

Firms are expected to put technical, contractual and organisational safeguards in place. These should stop clients in the EU from buying such tokens or building up larger positions in them.

Exit Options for Existing Holders

Regulators can still allow a narrow set of services so customers are able to leave current positions. These include liquidation, conversion, withdrawal, transfers and safekeeping. ESMA stressed that this relief must be temporary and watched closely by supervisors.

The latest position builds on the authority’s January 2025 guidance, which pushed for limits on trading and exchange services involving non-compliant stablecoins.
