Why The Collaboration Fell Apart

The two proposals, Base’s EIP-8130 and Ethereum’s EIP-8141, both aim to simplify wallet use by letting users pay fees without holding ETH and sign transactions with a phone passkey. According to an Ethlabs developer, talks broke down last week after the teams diverged on core priorities.

Ethereum is focused on censorship resistance, privacy and security, while Base is optimizing for scale, customization and regulatory compliance. Any technical fix identified would have required one side to compromise on its main goals, so the teams chose to proceed separately, shifting the challenge of handling two transaction formats onto wallet developers.

Ethereum’s Proposal Gets Priority Status

Ethereum has placed EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, on the roadmap for its upcoming Hegotá upgrade, where it received a “must-ship” label from the Ethereum Foundation’s protocol team.

The proposal treats a transaction as a series of programmable steps that separately handle sender validation, gas payment approval and execution, aiming to make account abstraction native to the network. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, a co-author, has said the proposal addresses nearly all outstanding issues account abstraction was meant to solve.

Base’s EIP-8130 takes a different approach, introducing a new transaction type alongside an onchain “keystore” that manages each account’s approved signers and authentication methods.
