Since a wallet’s public key remains visible onchain permanently, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically reverse engineer it to access private keys.

Upgrade Roadmap Requires Overlapping Forks

An upcoming 2027 upgrade called Hegotá won’t make Ethereum quantum-resistant itself, but will determine whether later upgrades stay on schedule. Five additional hard forks are planned afterward, requiring updates to occur roughly every seven months, with some work overlapping rather than proceeding one at a time. Planned changes include new signature schemes, post-quantum validator protections, and a fallback option designed to keep the network functional with reduced security guarantees if the full transition isn’t finished in time.
