Fatal Incident and Fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta

Defense Minister David McGuinty said on Saturday that people were killed and injured in a serious incident that sparked a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of the country's busiest military bases. Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, he called the situation tragic but did not say how many people died or were hurt, or what caused it. He said a major fire was still burning on Saturday evening and added that he could not recall an incident like it in recent memory. The base sits in east-central Alberta, about 210 km east of Edmonton.

Investigation and Government Response

The Canadian military and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the national government is working closely with Alberta and local authorities. General Jennie Carignan, chief of the Defense Staff, said the forces are fully engaged with federal, provincial and local officials and that the priority remains the welfare of members, their families and the community.

Wainwright Community and Fire Spread

The base had 1,310 military and civilian personnel as of 2021, according to census data, and the town of Wainwright, home to about 6,600 people, lies just to the north. The municipality said the fire crossed the base fence into the nearby district, but no evacuation orders have been issued.
