Authorities in France have reported a sharp increase in crypto related kidnappings, with 88 individuals formally charged across 12 ongoing investigations. According to national anti organized crime prosecutor Vanessa Perrée, more than 10 minors are among those charged, while 75 suspects have been placed in pretrial detention.
Law enforcement data shows that 135 crypto linked kidnapping incidents have been recorded since 2023. The number of cases has grown significantly year by year, with 18 incidents reported in 2024, 67 in 2025, and 47 cases already documented in 2026. Officials say these crimes typically involve abduction or unlawful detention, with victims forced to transfer cryptocurrency assets as ransom payments.

Organized Criminal Networks Behind Multiple Kidnappings
Prosecutors have identified signs of structured criminal networks, with some suspects allegedly involved in multiple cases. One recent investigation focused on a kidnapping in Challes-les-Eaux, where three men aged between 25 and 30 were arrested in connection with a November 2025 abduction involving cryptocurrency demands.
Two of the suspects were also linked to another case in Dompierre-sur-Mer, where masked attackers kidnapped a couple and forced them to transfer approximately €8 million in crypto. Authorities confirmed that all suspects in these cases have been formally charged and placed in custody, although legal representatives stated that at least one defendant denies the allegations.
Officials say the growing scale and frequency of crypto related kidnappings highlight the rapid evolution of criminal tactics linked to digital assets. Authorities have pledged to strengthen nationwide judicial responses and expand cooperation between investigative agencies to address the rising threat.
