The wife of The Sandbox co-founder and COO Sebastien Borget was reportedly targeted in an attempted kidnapping at the couple’s home in Villenoy, Seine-et-Marne, France, adding to growing concerns over crypto-related crimes in the country.

According to local reports, a man disguised as a delivery worker arrived at the property wearing a branded vest and carrying a package. When Borget’s wife opened the gate, five masked accomplices allegedly rushed inside, dragged her and attempted to force her into a vehicle.

Neighbors intervene as suspects flee

The kidnapping attempt failed after neighbors heard the victim calling for help and stepped in, forcing the attackers to flee. Police later arrested two suspects, while four others remain at large.

Authorities identified the arrested suspects as Mateo V. (born 2010) and Walid H. (born 2009) from Pantin, Seine-Saint-Denis. Investigators reportedly found a fake handgun, zip-tie restraints and balaclavas in their possession.

France faces surge in crypto-linked crimes

Early investigations suggest the incident may be linked to cryptocurrency. Sebastien Borget, 40, leads The Sandbox, an Ethereum-based virtual world using NFTs and the SAND token.

French police data shows 41 crypto-linked kidnappings or attempted abductions have been recorded since January 2026, with 135 cases reported since 2023, making France a major hotspot for such crimes.
