Turnout Falls Short of Organiser Claims

Gen Z regelt had rallies planned in 34 cities and first expected about 182,000 people. Police in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin counted up to 18,000, roughly half the 36,000 listed on the group’s own website. Authorities described most of the day as peaceful but warned that extremist groups were trying to exploit the movement. The federal interior ministry said parts of the far left and some groups tied to foreign extremist movements helped mobilise support.

What the Protesters and Officials Are Saying

Spokesperson Lina Friedrich said in Berlin that the group wants peace and freedom, better funding for health and education, and a fairer spread of burdens, and that it opposes compulsory military service. Steve, an 18 year old speaker in Munich, said the government answers only with cuts. Hesse’s interior minister Roman Poseck said France’s looting must not become a model. Some Berlin shops on the Kurfuerstendamm boarded up. The student body BSK keeps its distance and plans its own protest on November 20, while Technical University of Berlin student Sean Baker joined to highlight crumbling campus buildings.
