What’s Driving the Rally

Gold has climbed about 15% this month to roughly $4,650 an ounce, while silver has jumped 19% to around $69.50. A major trigger came when the US Treasury unexpectedly doubled its long-term bond buyback program to $4 billion per session, sparking heavy short-covering across metals markets. Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has pushed energy prices higher and reinforced gold’s role as a safe-haven asset, while silver’s stronger gains reflect a physical supply shortage combined with rising industrial demand from AI data centers and electrical grid upgrades.

A Painful Road to Get Here

Both metals crashed earlier this year after peaking in January, with gold falling 28.5% and silver dropping 58% by mid-2026, driven by tighter futures trading rules and a new inflation-focused Federal Reserve chair nominee. Prices bottomed in mid-July before rebounding as oil prices eased and the Fed held off on rate hikes.

Wall Street Turns More Optimistic

Truist’s chief investment officer recently upgraded his outlook on gold, citing stabilizing real yields, improved technical trends, steady central bank buying and a softer dollar.
