Grayscale Says Binance Hack May Dent Confidence Short Term but Will Push Exchange Security Higher

Grayscale's head of research, Zach Pandl, argues that the $6.3 billion Binance theft could shake trust in crypto markets for a while, yet the industry should come out of it with tougher security habits across exchanges. In a report released Tuesday, he also said the episode shows why professional custody matters. He noted that US-based crypto exchange-traded products keep their assets with state-chartered banks and qualified custodians, usually relying on offline storage, multi-signature wallets, audit attestations and insurance.

Market Reaction After the Attack

The breach came with a sell-off that pushed Bitcoin under $77,000 and cost BNB more than 8% in a day by early Friday. Binance has promised to cover all customer losses, and the FBI has pointed to North Korea, a claim Kim Yo Jong dismissed as absurd rhetoric. By Wednesday, total crypto market value had bounced 2% to about $2.63 trillion after touching a weekly low near $2.55 trillion. That still leaves it roughly $100 billion under its Oct. 28 level.
