Hundreds of Soldiers Reunite With Families After Russia Ukraine Talks
For families who spent years waiting, Friday brought a rare piece of good news. Moscow and Kyiv each handed over 270 captives, a trade that followed discussions with American mediators a few days earlier. Many of the men heading home were taken prisoner in 2022, during the opening phase of the invasion, and have spent the years since in detention.

Olenivka Survivors Among the Freed
The most striking detail involves five Ukrainians who were believed to have died when a detention site in Olenivka was hit. Kyiv calls that attack a war crime. Russia says Ukrainian fire caused it. The five turned up alive in this exchange, and their return will mean a great deal to relatives who had already mourned them.
Civilians and Russian Troops in the Swap
Zelenskiy said nine civilians were part of Ukraine’s returning group and promised that the search for every missing person would go on. On the Russian side, the defence ministry said its soldiers had reached Belarus and would get medical and psychological care before travelling onward.
How Often Do These Swaps Happen
Exchanges are among the few channels still open between the two sides. The previous big one came on August 19, bringing back 103 Ukrainians, with 10 more following later in the month.
