Iran Announces Funeral and Burial Schedule for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Iran has announced the official funeral arrangements for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed during Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on February 28. According to state media, funeral ceremonies will begin in Tehran on July 4 and continue through several major religious cities before concluding with his burial on July 9 in Mashhad, his hometown and one of Iran’s holiest cities.

Funeral Ceremonies Across Iran

The schedule includes additional memorial events in the religious city of Qom on July 7. The extended mourning period is notable because Islamic tradition generally calls for burial within 24 hours of death, although exceptions are permitted during wartime and extraordinary circumstances.

Leadership Transition After Khamenei’s Death

Khamenei led Iran for 36 years and played a central role in shaping the country’s regional influence and foreign policy. Following the airstrike that destroyed his Tehran compound, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, assumed the position of Supreme Leader.
