Iran accused the United States of breaking a fragile ceasefire after fresh American strikes targeted sites in southern Iran. Iranian officials described the attacks in Hormozgan province as a “gross violation” of the truce that has held for nearly seven weeks.
The United States said the strikes were defensive and aimed at protecting troops from threats posed by Iranian forces. According to U.S. officials, targets included missile launch sites and boats allegedly trying to place mines near key shipping routes.
Strait of Hormuz tensions raise global oil concerns
The latest developments come as both countries discuss a possible agreement to reduce fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade. The waterway usually carries nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments, but traffic has remained heavily disrupted since the conflict began in February.
Following reports of the strikes, global Brent crude oil prices climbed around 3.5%, moving above $99 per barrel as investors reacted to fears of supply disruption.
Iran seeks frozen assets release during Doha talks
Iranian officials have reportedly pushed for the release of nearly $24 billion in frozen funds as part of a temporary agreement being discussed in Doha. Negotiators are said to be working on a memorandum that could pause the conflict, restore shipping activity, and open the door for wider talks, including Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they reserve the right to respond to the latest U.S. military action.
