Israel has confirmed its first diagnosed case of hantavirus after a patient reportedly contracted the virus during a visit to Eastern Europe. Health officials said the patient sought medical treatment after developing symptoms linked to the rodent-borne infection.
Initial antibody testing suggested exposure to hantavirus, while a later PCR test confirmed the presence of the virus. The patient is currently under medical observation and remains in stable condition without requiring intensive care.
European Hantavirus Strain Raises Health Monitoring
Authorities clarified that the infection involves a European hantavirus strain and not the Andes virus associated with recent international concerns surrounding the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak.
Hantaviruses are mainly transmitted through contact with infected rodent urine, saliva or droppings. In Europe and Asia, the virus is commonly linked to haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which can affect the kidneys and blood vessels.
Health Officials Continue Surveillance
The case has been reported to Israel’s Health Ministry as monitoring efforts continue. Medical experts stress that early diagnosis and supportive treatment remain important in preventing severe complications from hantavirus infections.
